The anvil is the fixed surface a shredder hammer drives material against, and it absorbs the same energy the hammer does. Rotor caps sit between hammer positions and protect the rotor body itself, the one component in the mill that is genuinely expensive to replace.
Melco casts both in austenitic manganese steel and, where abrasion dominates, in high chrome. The choice follows the same logic as blow bars: manganese where impact and tramp metal dominate, high chrome where the wear is abrasive and steady.
Rotor caps in particular are cheap insurance. Allowing them to wear through exposes the rotor body to direct impact, which turns a routine wear part change into a major rebuild.

The gap between hammer and anvil sets how effectively material is broken. As the anvil wears the gap opens, throughput drops and product size drifts coarser, often before anyone identifies the anvil as the cause.
Because the cost of being wrong is disproportionate. Once a cap wears through, impact reaches the rotor body directly, and rotor repair means extended downtime and a far larger bill than a set of caps.
Yes. Vertical shaft impactor anvils are cast in the same alloy families, typically high chrome where the feed is abrasive and manganese where impact dominates.
